What to Expect During Your First Medical Marijuana Doctor’s Visit

Visiting a medical marijuana doctor for the first time can be an encouraging step towards finding relief from your chronic condition. If you’re considering scheduling an appointment, it’s important to understand what to expect so you can arrive prepared.

Who Is Eligible for Medical Marijuana in Florida?

In Florida, medical marijuana is legal only for certain qualifying patients. The specific conditions that are eligible for medical marijuana treatment in Florida include:

Cancer

Glaucoma

Epilepsy

ALS

HIV/AIDS

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Crohn’s disease

Parkinson’s disease

Multiple sclerosis

Other terminal conditions

If you have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, you may be eligible for a medical marijuana recommendation from a doctor.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Before your appointment, you’ll need to gather some documentation so your doctor has the information they need.

Identification and Proof of Florida Residency

First, make sure to bring both identification and proof of your Florida residency. A driver’s license or other state-issued ID card will work for both. If you plan to use a different type of identification, a piece of mail marked with your Florida address, such as a recent utility bill, will work to prove your Florida residency status.

Medical Documentation

You’ll also need to provide medical documentation to verify your diagnosis with a qualifying condition for medical marijuana. Your medical marijuana doctor will likely want to review your complete medical history as well, including any current prescriptions.
You should also communicate with your medical marijuana doctor about any additional forms they may require you to fill out before your appointment.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

During your visit, your medical marijuana doctor will review your medical history and proof of diagnosis. They may ask you some questions about your condition and your health history to help them better understand your needs.
The doctor may also perform a brief examination to collect basic health information such as height, weight, blood pressure, vital signs, etc. This examination can help the doctor get a better picture of your overall health and help them identify the most suitable marijuana treatment plan for you.
If the doctor determines that you would benefit from medical marijuana treatment, they will write you a medical marijuana recommendation. It’s important to understand that this recommendation is not a medical prescription but rather a professional endorsement for your use of medical marijuana.
Finally, the doctor will explain what you can expect from medical marijuana treatment and answer any questions you may have about medical marijuana. They may recommend specific methods of intake, such as smoking, vaping, or using edibles, based on what’s most appropriate for your specific situation.

Make Appointment Now

How to Get Your Medical Marijuana Card In Florida

Once the doctor has given you their recommendation, they will register you with the Florida Department of Health Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU). You will need to log in to the OMMU registry and submit an application to obtain your medical marijuana card. Your doctor may be able to assist you in completing your application or provide additional resources.

If you’re interested in trying medical marijuana but aren’t sure how to go about getting a card in Florida, Iona Cannabis Clinic is here to help. The process is simpler than you might think, and we’re going to outline it in this article.

Qualifying Conditions to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Florida

If you have a condition qualified for medical marijuana treatment, it’s up to your primary care physician to diagnose it. A diagnosis qualifies you for a medical marijuana card.

Here are a number of the qualifying conditions:

Cancer

Extreme nausea

Epilepsy

HIV/AIDS

Glaucoma

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Crohn’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease

ALS

Multiple Sclerosis

Medical conditions with symptoms similar to those listed

Terminal conditions of varying types

Chronic pain

Book an Appointment with a Medical Marijuana Doctor

After you’ve been diagnosed by your primary care physician, it’s time to book an appointment with a medical marijuana doctor like Dr. Sonn here at Iona Cannabis Clinic. In order to qualify for a card, you must come in and see the doctor face-to-face.

Here’s our Delray Beach office information:

Fill Out Your Application

After Dr. Sonn has registered you online, you’ll receive communication from the Medical Marijuana Use Registry – and remember to check your junk/spam folder! These emails contain login credentials, and that’s how you’ll acquire access to your registry profile.

You can either apply online through your registry profile or through the mail in order to receive your ID card – if you do it online, the approval time tends to be much quicker. There is a five-day processing wait for online payments, and once your payment is accepted, your application will be processed in about five more days.

After You’ve Been Approved

After you’ve been approved, you’ll receive an email that contains a temporary ID card to have until your actual card comes through the mail in 2-4 weeks. Use this card for the purchase of medical marijuana at any Medical Marijuana Treatment Center or dispensary.

Understanding Your Medical Marijuana Card

Your medical marijuana card is good for one year. Renewing it is as simple as logging onto your online profile and following the process there.

As you can see, obtaining a medical marijuana card doesn’t have to be intimidating. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us here at Iona Cannabis Clinic – we are here to help!
